A few weekends ago, I made a much-anticipated journey up to 82nd street and 5th avenue for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Spring 2012 Costume Institute exhibition, Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.
Inspired by Miguel Covarrubias’s “Impossible Interviews” for Vanity Fair in the 1930s, the exhibit highlights the striking affinities of Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada, two extremely talented Italian designers from two very different eras.
In addition to showchasing signature ensembles from the designers, the exhibit also features videos of simulated conversations between the two discussing their approaches to style. Not only was it a treat to wander around beautiful clothes and accessories (they even displayed one of Prada’s race car-inspired pumps from the Spring 2012 collection!), but I discovered it was none other than Baz Luhrmann (the genius behind the upcoming remake of The Great Gatsby and the sultry classic, Moulin Rouge) who directed the video footage.

Since the exhibition ends tomorrow, Sunday August 19th, I highly suggest every fashion fan make this pulchritudinous pilgrimage to the Upper East Side.

P.s. Since the cost of the exhibit is based on donations, make sure to set aside some time (and extra cash) for the museum’s gift shop. You’ll be surprised by the number of charming treasures you can find there.
